FABmaster, S.A, incorporated in 1994 (about 28 years ago), was a leading worldwide supplier of CIM Automation software for board assembly optimization, incircuit & fixtureless test & inspection. Later in year 2000, it was acquired by Tecnomatix Technologies, which is currently owned by Siemens AG.

In regard of enterprise development, FABmaster failed to go further in this industry. However, as a pioneer in PCB test & inspection industry, FABmaster has provided experience of great value for the successors of the industry.

Even though it was in 1990s, FABmaster’s product strategy is forward-looking. Its product FABmaster GOLD – Test & Inspection is an integrated solution that allows electronics manufacturers to go from design to test & inspection in a matter of minutes or hours, rather than days or weeks. Even in the era of industry 4.0, efficiency or lower time cost has had a high profile.

After the FABmaster was merged into EM-Power product line of Technomatix, it was renamed as eM-Test Expert, which is now called Test Expert after it was incorporated into Siemens. Test Expert is nowadays the most widely used test programming and design for test (DFT) software in the electronics manufacturing industry today. With its fast, user-programmable nail/probe selection routine and complementary interactive tools, Test Expert offers complete flexibility and control during fixture design for in-circuit test (ICT) and advanced flying probe selection.

As a pioneer in PCB design for test (DFT) & test programming, Test Expert has made a progress in the field, and become relatively established and comprehensive, which also means it would be difficult to gain significant breakthroughs or innovations in the future. On the other hand, the news that Siemens will stop providing part of services for Test Expert is also a blow to its users.

However, the industry 4.0 has been an inevitable trend, every industry, every sector and even a product must keep up going forward and upgrading to follow the trend. In the filed of PCB test & inspection, more and more enterprises are looking for new opportunities to change the Test software product.

After FABmaster, a lot of late-comers began exploration of this field and have made a progress.
